Aruba is located about 12 degrees north of the equator, approximately 18 miles off the Paraguana Peninsula of Venezuela. The island, one of the Lesser Antilles islands, is about 19 miles long and 5 miles wide. CALLING ARUBA – The international dialing code for Aruba is 297. Area codes do not exist in Aruba. All numbers start with 8 except for cellular telephone numbers which start with 9.

CELL PHONES – Your cell phone will work here but check on roaming charges. Contact your local service provider before traveling to Aruba. It is possible to rent a cell phone right at the airport in the arrivals terminal. A deposit and proper identification are required.

CREDIT CARDS – All major credit cards and traveler’s checks are accepted just about everywhere.

CURRENCY – Aruba’s currency is the Florin, denoted by the letters ‘Afl.’, divided into 100 cents.  US currency is accepted in most places.  To change Florins to US dollars, divide the Florin amount in half, and add 10%.  Some shops will not accept US $ 50 or US $ 100 due to worldwide counterfeiting.  Personal checks from outside Aruba are not accepted.

LEGAL AGES – Drinking age is 18. The gambling age is 18. Identification may be requested in both cases.

DRINKING WATER – Aruba has the world’s second-largest desalination plant which supplies the island with pure, refreshing water.

ELECTRICITY – Same as in North America, i.e. 110Volts AC at 60 cycles.

TIME – The time in Aruba is Atlantic Standard Time. It is the same as Eastern Daylight Savings time all year ‘round.

WHAT TO WEAR – With Aruba’s tropical climate, you will be comfortable in casual summer wear plus some light evening wear for restaurants, nightclubs, and casinos (men might need a light jacket for some of these). Bathing suits are not permitted in shopping and business areas. Shorts and T-shirts are not permitted in the upscale restaurants.
