Most of the better-known beaches are in the southwestern part of Grenada, including the beaches at Calabash, Lance aux Epines, and Horseshoe. This is also the location of Grenada’s most famous two-mile long Grand Anse beach. Located just south of St. George’s, this stunning soft white sand beach is the sight of many of the island’s hotels and resorts. However, unlike the other Caribbean islands, Grenada has made sure that the development is very minimal. By law, no hotel on the island can surpass the height of the palm trees.

Keeping in mind the intimate atmosphere, Grenada’s coast is comprised of many small bays and inlets. Several secluded and private beaches, many of which seem untouched, provide a perfect getaway for a romantic couple.

The island is one of the yachting centers of the Caribbean. Even if you’re not a sailor, you shouldn’t miss an opportunity to enjoy the adventure of a regatta or a delightful day or evening cruise. The Grenada Yacht Club organizes many sailing events each year, including the well-known Grenada Sailing Festival in February.

Grenada offers a number of excellent snorkeling and dive locations. The west coast of the island is edged by one long reef, which is marked by the 600-foot wreck of the Bianca, a cruiseliner that sunk in 1961. The most convenient snorkeling is found just south of Grand Anse beach. However, the most popular sites for diving are not on Grenada, but on its sister island, Carriacou. Although essentially undeveloped, Carriacou is bordered by well-preserved reefs.

Historically, sport fishermen have acknowledged the abundance of fish inhabiting Grenada’s waters. Professionals from all over the world come out to participate in the annual Spice Island Game Fishing Tournament. However, the novice need not shy away. There are more than enough charters offering day trips to the same areas.

And there are more options as well. The nine-hole Grenada Golf & Country Club near Grand Anse offers a challenging, but more importantly, beautiful course. Tennis is easily found on the island as well. If your hotel doesn’t feature courts, it is rather easy to make arrangements with another hotel that does. There are also public courts at Grand Anse.

Other watersports are available in Grenada, such as parasailing and waterskiing. Most resorts offer the full assortment of beach watersports, and some companies offer charters and rentals.

With its wide variety of natural vegetation, Grenada offers some of the finest walking, hiking and trekking opportunities in the Caribbean. You can enjoy the native flora or beautiful mountain terrain on a tour of the island’s world-famous landscape.
